"Style is the hallmark of a temperament stamped upon the material at hand"
About this Quote
The phrase “material at hand” quietly demystifies art. The raw stuff can be humble: a sentence, a scene, a biography, a social moment. What matters is the imprint. In that sense, Maurois is pushing back against two common fantasies: the romantic idea that style descends like inspiration, and the technocratic idea that style is just a set of learnable tricks. You can learn craft, yes, but craft alone doesn’t generate the unmistakable signature that comes from temperament repeatedly encountering the world.
Context matters. Maurois made his reputation with biographies and essays - forms where the writer’s authority is always on trial. He’s telling you how to read: look for the person behind the method. And he’s also telling writers how to write: you can’t hide behind neutrality. Even the cleanest, most “objective” language is a temperament pretending not to be one. Style is what leaks out when you think you’re just handling the facts.
