Life & Wisdom Quote by Shel Silverstein

"Tell me I'm clever, Tell me I'm kind, Tell me I'm talented, Tell me I'm cute, Tell me I'm sensitive, Graceful and wise, Tell me I'm perfect - But tell me the truth"

About this Quote

A sugar rush of compliments, stacked so high they start to wobble. Silverstein builds the line like a pleading chant: clever, kind, talented, cute, sensitive, graceful, wise, perfect. Each adjective is socially approved, almost pre-chewed. The repetition mimics the way praise gets dispensed in modern life: in bulk, with a friendly smile, often as a substitute for actually seeing someone. By the time we reach "perfect", the list has tipped into parody. Nobody believes it, including the speaker. That is the trap.

The turn - "But tell me the truth" - lands like a pin in a balloon. It reframes the entire poem as a negotiation between ego and hunger for honesty. The speaker is not rejecting affirmation; they're exposing its limits. Compliments are easy currency, a way to keep the room comfortable. Truth is riskier: it might mean "you're selfish sometimes", or "you're trying too hard", or "you're scared". Silverstein's genius is that he doesn't specify the truth. He leaves a negative space the reader fills with their own dread, which makes the line feel personal, even accusatory.

As a poet who wrote for children and adults with the same clean blade, Silverstein understands how early we learn to chase approval and how late we learn to ask for something better. The quote works because it stages a small revolution: choosing accuracy over adoration, even while admitting how badly we crave both.
