Time & Perspective Quote by Jeff Miller

"That future depends on the values of self-government, our sense of duty, loyalty, self-confidence and regard for the common good. We are a diverse country, and getting more diverse. And these virtues are what keep this great country together"

About this Quote

The trick here is how “future” gets made to sound like a forecast when it’s really a demand. Miller frames national survival as contingent on a tight bundle of virtues - “self-government,” “duty,” “loyalty,” “self-confidence,” “common good” - words that feel bipartisan in isolation but become ideological when stacked. It’s a familiar political move: define the moral vocabulary first, then treat policy disagreements as character flaws.

The nod to diversity does two jobs at once. “We are a diverse country, and getting more diverse” signals demographic reality and a kind of sober acceptance. But it also quietly casts diversity as a stress test, a force that could pull the country apart unless citizens recommit to unifying virtues. The subtext isn’t anti-diversity so much as conditional pluralism: difference is acceptable, even inevitable, so long as it’s disciplined by loyalty and a shared civic script.

Notice what’s missing: rights, equality, and institutions. “Self-government” is invoked less as a set of structures (courts, elections, checks and balances) and more as a posture of personal responsibility. “Loyalty” and “self-confidence” smuggle in culture-war valences - respect for tradition, faith in national narratives - without naming any specific flashpoints.

Contextually, this reads like coalition maintenance: reassure an anxious mainstream that diversity won’t dissolve cohesion, while telling newcomers and dissenters that belonging comes with behavioral expectations. It works because it’s aspirational enough to sound unifying, but elastic enough to police who counts as serving “the common good.”
