Aging & Wisdom Quote by Philip Pullman

"That's the duty of the old, to be anxious on behalf of the young. And the duty of the young is to scorn the anxiety of the old"

About this Quote

Pullman gives generational tension the clean snap of a proverb: anxiety flows downhill; contempt flows back up. The line flatters neither side. It frames worry as an obligation of age, not a personality flaw, and it frames youthful dismissal as a necessary counterweight, not mere ingratitude. That symmetry is the trick. By calling both responses “duty,” Pullman turns what usually reads as a family squabble into a system: caution produces pushback, pushback forces the world to move, and movement generates new reasons for caution.

The subtext is less “kids these days” than “civilization depends on a managed conflict.” Older people carry memory - of mistakes, accidents, costs - and memory is basically anxiety with evidence. Younger people carry possibility, and possibility can’t breathe if it’s constantly supervised. Scorn, here, isn’t just teenage eye-rolling; it’s a developmental tool. It creates the psychological distance required to take risks, change norms, and refuse inherited fears.

Contextually, Pullman’s work often pits institutional guardianship against individual moral agency. He’s suspicious of protection that curdles into control, especially when it’s justified as care. This aphorism smuggles that critique into everyday life: the old can’t help forecasting disaster, but the young must treat those forecasts as optional, or else they’ll never test the future. The sting is that Pullman also implies a tragedy: both sides are doing their job, and both will feel misunderstood while doing it.
