Art & Creativity Quote by Steven Morrissey

"That's why I do this music business thing, it's communication with people without having the extreme inconvenience of actually phoning anybody up"

About this Quote

Morrissey turns the romantic myth of “connecting through music” into a deadpan customer-service complaint: intimacy, yes, but please don’t make him talk to anyone. The line works because it’s both a confession and a shield. He frames art as communication, then immediately punctures it with “extreme inconvenience,” a phrase that makes human contact sound like a bureaucratic hassle. That’s the joke, and also the tell.

The intent is self-mythologizing in a distinctly Morrissey way: he wants to be seen as sensitive, receptive, emotionally porous, yet constitutionally allergic to the everyday demands that come with being known. Music becomes the perfect medium for that contradiction. It lets him broadcast vulnerability at scale while keeping the messy reciprocity of real relationships at arm’s length. You can feel the implied contract: I’ll give you my feelings, you give me your devotion, and neither of us has to endure small talk.

The subtext also nods to celebrity’s warped social economics. Fans expect access; artists sell authenticity; everyone pretends it’s personal. Morrissey admits the machinery out loud: the “communication” is one-way, curated, and conveniently uninterruptible. In the context of his persona - the self-aware misfit, the prickly romantic, the performer who both courts and resents attention - it lands as an elegant piece of self-parody. He’s mocking himself, but he’s also setting terms: you may reach him through the song, not through the phone.
