Life & Wisdom Quote by Euripides

"The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that, and live that way, you are really a wise man"

About this Quote

Balance, here, isnt self-help advice; its a survival strategy in a cosmos that does not care about your plans. Euripides writes from inside a Greek moral universe where hubris gets you punished and moderation is not just a virtue but a kind of civic technology. The line carries the DNA of tragedy: human beings are most dangerous to themselves when they forget scale.

The phrasing does a quiet double move. It tells you to keep your life in proportion, then immediately widens the frame to "the great powers around us and in us". That second clause is the sting. The threat isnt only outside (fate, the gods, political chaos, war); its also internal (desire, rage, pride, erotic obsession, the need to be right). Euripidean characters implode because they misrecognize those inner powers as personal freedom, mistaking impulse for identity. Wisdom, in this view, isnt brilliance or moral purity; its accurate self-assessment under pressure.

Theres also a political subtext. Euripides is writing for an Athenian audience watching democracy and empire strain against each other, where private passions easily become public disasters. "Acknowledge" is doing work: it implies restraint born of recognition, not submission born of fear. You dont abolish the powers; you name them, negotiate with them, and refuse to be possessed.

Even the gendered "wise man" lands like a tragic wink: in Euripides, the people who claim mastery are often the least balanced. The line praises equilibrium while reminding you how rare it is.
