Faith & Spirit Quote by Jim Hightower

"The Bible declares that on the sixth day God created man. Right then and there, God should have demanded a damage deposit"

About this Quote

Jim Hightower turns Genesis into a consumer complaint, and the joke lands because it drags divine grandeur down to the level of a rental agreement. A “damage deposit” is what you demand when you expect the tenant to break things. Put in God’s mouth, it’s a comic reversal: the Creator isn’t triumphant at the finish line of creation; He’s already bracing for the mess humans will make of it.

The intent is less theology than politics. Hightower, an activist with a populist knack for plain talk, borrows the authority of a familiar religious story and then weaponizes it against human arrogance. The line flatters believers and skeptics at once: believers recognize the reference; skeptics enjoy the punchline. Either way, the target is our habit of acting like the world is ours to scuff up, strip-mine, and walk away from.

Subtext: responsibility isn’t optional, it’s overdue. A damage deposit implies accountability, a bill that eventually comes due. That’s environmental policy in a single prop joke, and it’s also a critique of political and corporate leaders who behave like they’ll never have to pay for the collateral damage. By imagining God as a landlord, Hightower reframes “dominion” not as a license but as a lease. You can live here, but you don’t own consequence.

Context matters, too. Coming out of a Southern-inflected progressive tradition, Hightower knows scripture is cultural common ground in America. He doesn’t mock faith; he recruits it. The laugh is the hook, the moral invoice is the point.
