Age is supposed to be earned through decades of weather and gravity; here it’s engineered.

The subtext is the 19th-century Western gaze at East Asian craft: impressed, slightly suspicious, and eager to translate the unfamiliar into an Old World reference that his readers already revere. “Cedar of Lebanon” isn’t a neutral comparison. It’s biblical, monumental, imperial - a shorthand for authenticity and grandeur.
