But he immediately undercuts any triumphal mood with a more stubborn image: a “concrete building” that still stands. Communism, in his telling, isn’t just an idea that can be disproved and shelved. It’s infrastructure - habits, institutions, police files, compromised consciences, an architecture of fear and dependency - poured into daily life and hardened over decades.

The rhetorical move is classic Solzhenitsyn: replace the abstract with the physical, then make the physical dangerous. “Concrete” matters because it’s heavy, ugly, and difficult to dismantle without casualties. “Instead of freeing ourselves” is the needle. Freedom is presented as the seductive slogan of the post-communist moment - the banner people want to wave. Solzhenitsyn, shaped by the Gulag and the long afterlife of state coercion, argues that the first task is survival: moral, civic, even literal. The danger isn’t only a communist revival; it’s being “crushed” by what the regime built - corruption networks, cynicism, revenge politics, a hollowed public sphere.
