The intent is corrective, almost parental. Porter is puncturing a common managerial fantasy: that experimentation equals agility, that motion equals progress. He’s arguing the opposite. When an organization can’t articulate where it will win and what it will deliberately not do, every shiny opportunity becomes urgent. “Willing” is the tell; it implies consent, even eagerness, to drift. The subtext is that this willingness is rarely principled. It’s a symptom of fear - fear of commitment, fear of being wrong, fear of missing out while competitors look decisive.
