"The company without a strategy is willing to try anything"
About this Quote
The intent is corrective, almost parental. Porter is puncturing a common managerial fantasy: that experimentation equals agility, that motion equals progress. He’s arguing the opposite. When an organization can’t articulate where it will win and what it will deliberately not do, every shiny opportunity becomes urgent. “Willing” is the tell; it implies consent, even eagerness, to drift. The subtext is that this willingness is rarely principled. It’s a symptom of fear - fear of commitment, fear of being wrong, fear of missing out while competitors look decisive.
Context matters: Porter’s reputation was built in an era when corporate leaders were urged to chase growth across categories, geographies, and gimmicks. His frameworks (competitive positioning, trade-offs, fit) were a rebuttal to that conglomerate-era sprawl and, later, to the “pivot” culture that treats identity as temporary. The line also needles internal politics: without a strategy, the loudest executive or the most recent crisis sets direction. The company becomes a collection of projects, not a system.
Why it works rhetorically is its inversion. “Anything” is exposed as the opposite of freedom - it’s the tax you pay for not choosing. Strategy, for Porter, is less about bold vision than the courage to say no and mean it.
