Leadership Quote by Gore Vidal

"The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity - much less dissent"

About this Quote

Vidal’s barb lands because it flatters and indicts at once: “one of the wonders of the Western world” sounds like a tourism slogan, then curdles into an accusation of soft authoritarianism. He’s not claiming the U.S. lacks a First Amendment; he’s arguing that a formally free press can still be functionally captured. The trick is in his choice of “managed,” which frames the erosion of objectivity as an achievement of systems, not a conspiracy of villains. Power doesn’t have to ban dissent if it can price it out, starve it of distribution, or drown it in safer, sponsor-friendly noise.

The subtext is vintage Vidal: the American empire congratulates itself on liberty while perfecting subtler controls. By calling corporate influence a “grip,” he conjures something physical and involuntary, a hand around the throat of public perception. “Opinion” matters more than “news” here; Vidal implies that once the boundaries of acceptable debate are set by advertisers, owners, and access journalism, the population can be steered without ever feeling coerced.

Contextually, Vidal spent decades as a patrician dissident, mocking the bipartisan consensus on war, markets, and American innocence. Coming out of the late Cold War and into the era of media consolidation, his line anticipates the logic of the 24-hour cycle: controversy is monetized, but real dissent is treated as bad for business. The punch is his comparative claim - “No First World country” - which is less a statistic than a provocation. Vidal isn’t asking to be fact-checked; he’s daring readers to notice how normalized corporate filters have become, and how quickly “objectivity” becomes a brand posture rather than a civic obligation.

Evidence:
The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western world. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity--much less dissent. (August 7/14, 1989 issue; exact page not verified). The strongest evidence points to this being originally published by Gore Vidal in The Nation in the August 7/14, 1989 issue, not first in the 1992 book The Decline and Fall of the American Empire. A contemporary Los Angeles Times report from August 4, 1989 says Vidal 'writes' this line in The Nation while describing that issue's cover story. A later scholarly citation also ties the quotation to 'The Nation magazine, August 7/14, 1989.' Many later quote sites and secondary sources attribute it to Vidal's 1992 book The Decline and Fall of the American Empire, which likely reprinted or reused the passage, but that appears to be later than the 1989 magazine appearance. I could not directly inspect a scan of the original Nation pages here, so the exact article title and page number within the issue remain unverified.
