That’s the strategic sweetness of the line. It sidesteps the reflexive culture-war posture (either romance or repudiation) and replaces it with a process word: “work.”

The subtext is almost an apology for optimism. She flags “that sounds like a cliche,” anticipating the eye-roll that greets any claim that shared projects heal divides. By naming the cliche, she tries to earn credibility: I know the script, but I’m telling you the exception. The repetition of “it happened” is doing rhetorical labor, too. It’s less poetic than insistent, like someone pointing to receipts. Don’t debate me; look at the outcome.

Contextually, this reads like the post-2000s makeover narrative where design becomes a socially acceptable language for talking about race, memory, and inequality without sounding like a lecture. “A beautiful idea” functions as a soft-focus moral: beauty as a bridge, aesthetics as a neutral territory. That’s appealing and also slightly evasive. The Deep South’s “different history” is code for histories that are not just “fascinating” but violent and unresolved. Gorder’s intent is to keep the door open anyway, betting that collaboration can do what arguments can’t: produce a shared artifact people can’t easily dismiss.
