Life & Wisdom Quote by P. G. Wodehouse

"The fascination of shooting as a sport depends almost wholly on whether you are at the right or wrong end of the gun"

About this Quote

Wodehouse lands the joke with the effortless politeness of a man slipping a banana peel under the entire idea of “sport.” The line looks like an aphorism, but it’s really a booby-trapped definition: shooting is “fascinating” only if you’re protected by distance, privilege, and choice. Put someone at the wrong end and the pastime instantly reverts to what it always was underneath the tweed and talk of “good form” - organized threat.

The intent is classic Wodehouse: puncture masculine bravado without sounding like you’re making a speech. He doesn’t argue against guns; he simply relocates the reader’s imagination. The comedy comes from the blunt symmetry of “right” and “wrong,” a moral vocabulary smuggled into a technical setup. You can hear the upper-class cheerfulness of the word “fascination” colliding with the unavoidably violent reality of a barrel pointed your way. That collision is the subtext: comfort edits ethics. The same act can be marketed as recreation when the risk is outsourced.

Context matters. Wodehouse wrote in a Britain where field sports were social signaling as much as entertainment - a ritual of class, control, and competence. Coming out of an era shadowed by mechanized slaughter, his lightness carries an extra sting: modern life had already shown what “shooting” looks like when it’s not framed as a weekend diversion. The line functions like a moral camera shift, forcing the reader to see that the thrill is perspective, not principle.
