War & Peace Quote by Oliver Tambo

"The fight for freedom must go on until it is won; until our country is free and happy and peaceful as part of the community of man, we cannot rest"

About this Quote

Tambo’s sentence doesn’t so much inspire as discipline. The first clause is a command disguised as inevitability: “must go on until it is won.” No romantic timeline, no flattering faith in gradual progress. Freedom here is a campaign with a clear victory condition, and the phrasing preempts fatigue, factionalism, and the seductive logic of “good enough.”

The real work happens in the chain of adjectives that follows: “free and happy and peaceful.” Tambo refuses to let “freedom” stand as a standalone trophy. Political liberation without lived dignity is treated as unfinished business; happiness and peace are not soft add-ons but metrics that expose hollow independence. The subtext is strategic: he’s speaking to a movement that could be tempted by symbolic wins, or by the moral vanity of struggle itself. He insists on outcomes.

Then he widens the frame: “as part of the community of man.” In apartheid South Africa, isolation and dehumanization were policy, and the ANC in exile fought not only the regime but the world’s willingness to normalize it. This line recruits internationalism as both moral claim and political tool: South Africa’s future belongs in a shared human order, not as a pariah state, not as a racial exception.

“We cannot rest” is less martyr’s poetry than organizational doctrine. It’s a warning to comrades and a message to allies: don’t applaud the idea of freedom; commit to the cost of completing it.
