Daily Inspiration Quote by David Cronenberg

"The filmmaking process is a very personal one to me, I mean it really is a personal kind of communication. It's not as though it's a study of fear or any of that stuff"

About this Quote

Cronenberg is yanking the rug out from under the film-school version of himself: the director as clinical expert, the movie as case study. He insists on the opposite. Filmmaking, for him, isn’t a lab report on “fear” or a tidy genre exercise; it’s a private language smuggled into public view. That’s a startling claim from a filmmaker so often filed under “body horror,” as if his work exists to diagnose the audience’s anxieties with a scalpel and a smirk.

The line works because it reframes what people take for coldness as intimacy. Cronenberg’s films can feel antiseptic in their surfaces - clean lighting, composed frames, restrained performances - but he’s arguing those choices are not emotional evasions. They’re how he speaks. When he rejects “a study of fear,” he’s also rejecting the idea that the audience’s reaction is the primary subject. The real subject is the maker’s internal wiring: desire, curiosity, disgust, tenderness, the strange negotiations we make with our own bodies and technologies.

Context matters here: Cronenberg emerged during a period when horror was becoming both commercially codified and academically quarantined. He’s pushing back against being turned into a “fear guy,” a specialist in scares, when his cinema is closer to confession than experiment. The subtext is almost defensive: don’t reduce my work to a thesis statement. If you come looking for a lesson about terror, you’ll miss the point. The films aren’t about fear as an object; they’re communications from inside it, sent with unsettling precision.
