Art & Creativity Quote by Franz Kline

"The final test of a painting, theirs, mine, any other, is: does the painter's emotions come across?"

About this Quote

Kline’s line is a neat gut-punch to every fussy debate about technique, symbolism, or “what it’s worth.” He’s drawing a hard boundary around painting as transmission, not ornament: the canvas isn’t a site for decoding trivia, it’s a pressure system meant to move feeling from one body to another. Coming from a leading Abstract Expressionist, the phrasing matters. “Final test” implies he’s not denying craft or composition; he’s demoting them. You can pass a hundred preliminary exams - color theory, formal balance, art-historical references - and still fail the only one that counts.

The subtext is defensive and generous at once. Defensive because mid-century abstraction was routinely attacked as empty, fraudulent, or purely decorative. Kline answers: if you didn’t feel anything, the problem might not be the painting. Generous because he extends the standard to “theirs, mine, any other.” That’s an egalitarian swipe at gatekeeping. Masterpiece or student work, the metric is the same: emotional legibility.

It’s also a sly reframing of “emotion” away from sentimentality. Kline’s own black slashes and architectural strokes don’t beg for empathy; they broadcast urgency, force, tempo. Emotion here is not a diary entry but a physical event - velocity, hesitation, aggression, restraint - made visible. In that sense, he’s redefining authenticity as impact, not confession: the painter’s inner life has to survive translation into paint, scale, and gesture, and arrive intact in the viewer’s nervous system.
