Revolution, Newton insists, begins with an obituary. The line is blunt enough to sound like fatalism, but its real purpose is disciplinary: it strips away romance. A “revolutionary” isn’t a costume you try on; it’s a commitment that, in America’s political weather, reliably draws surveillance, imprisonment, exile, or death. Newton isn’t predicting doom as a metaphysical truth so much as naming the state’s predictable response to organized Black insurgency.

The sentence works because it’s both warning and initiation. “First lesson” frames activism as education, not impulse, and implies that anyone who hasn’t confronted the price is still playing at politics. “Must learn” is coercive in a way that echoes the coercion of the system he’s fighting; the revolutionary is forced to accept reality before he can responsibly act within it. Then comes the hook: “doomed” is not “might die,” it’s “already marked.” That language denies the comforting myth that courage alone can keep you safe. It also, paradoxically, offers a kind of freedom: if you internalize doom, you stop bargaining with power for permission to resist.

Context sharpens the stakes. Newton co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966, when armed self-defense, community programs, and unapologetic rhetoric collided with COINTELPRO, police violence, and an American consensus that treated Black radicalism as an internal enemy. The quote is subtextually a rebuttal to liberal gradualism: if the system reserves lethal consequences for dissent anyway, fear can’t be the organizing principle. The point isn’t martyrdom; it’s clarity.
