"The Founding Fathers in their wisdom decided that children were an unnatural strain on parents. So they provided jails called schools, equipped with tortures called an education"
About this Quote
The joke is not that the founders literally designed public education as incarceration. It’s that we talk about institutions with a saintly vocabulary while experiencing them as coercive. By renaming school as jail and education as torture, Updike compresses a lifetime of small humiliations - bells, permission slips, standardized tests, surveillance disguised as guidance - into the language of punishment. The extremity is the point: exaggeration is how resentment finally gets a voice.
Subtextually, there’s an adult confession hiding inside the child’s complaint. Parents, in this frame, don’t just outsource learning; they outsource exhaustion, conflict, and the daily management of a developing person. School becomes society’s pressure valve: a place to store children, normalize them, and certify them. Updike’s cynicism lands in postwar America’s era of expanding suburbs and expanding systems, when education is sold as salvation and felt, by many, as regimentation.
It’s a provocation aimed less at teachers than at the story we tell ourselves: that compulsory schooling is purely benevolent. Updike’s bite comes from forcing the sentimental narrative to admit its coercive underside.
