Most’s God isn’t a theological puzzle; it’s a political indictment dressed as blasphemy. The line works by taking Christianity’s own narrative machinery - covenant, sin, punishment, redemption - and recoding it as a sadistic feedback loop. “Promises only to break them” mocks providence as a con: hope is offered, then withdrawn, to keep believers emotionally dependent. “Sends them pestilence and disease in order to heal them” turns the Christian cure into a protection racket. The healer is also the arsonist, so gratitude becomes compulsory.

The real target is less heaven than hierarchy. Most, a revolutionary agitator in the late 19th century, wrote in an age when churches were often braided into state authority, teaching obedience, patience, and moral accounting to workers living with industrial misery. By portraying God as one who “demoralizes mankind in order to improve it,” he’s attacking the moral logic that makes suffering virtuous and submission a form of character-building. If degradation is rebranded as “discipline,” then the people responsible for degradation can pose as benefactors.

The subtext is classic radical anticlericalism: religion as social technology. You don’t need to crush dissent if you can convince the oppressed that misery is either deserved (sin) or useful (salvation). Most’s cynicism is strategic. He’s trying to sever the emotional bond that makes exploitation feel meaningful, replacing religious consolation with anger sharp enough to organize.
