Politics & Power Quote by Jacques Maritain

"The great and admirable strength of America consists in this, that America is truly the American people"

About this Quote

A nation defined less by blood and soil than by an act of membership: Maritain’s line flatters America, but it also narrows the target. The “great and admirable strength” isn’t the Constitution as parchment, the economy as output, or the military as hardware. It’s the collective willingness to treat “the American people” as the country’s primary reality. In one stroke, he shifts patriotism from scenery to citizenship.

The phrasing matters. “Consists in this” reads like a philosopher pinning down an essence, but the punch is democratic: America is “truly” its people, not its elites, not its myths, not its institutions unless those institutions remain answerable to human beings. Maritain is writing in the shadow of European collapse and totalitarian spectacle; he’s a mid-century Catholic humanist arguing that modern democracy can be morally serious without becoming authoritarian. Against regimes that claimed to embody “the nation” while crushing actual citizens, he offers a deceptively simple test: who counts, and who gets to speak?

There’s subtextual pressure in the compliment. If America’s strength is that it is its people, then any attempt to redefine “the people” downward - through racism, nativism, disenfranchisement, or curated belonging - is not just injustice but self-sabotage. The line also rebukes a certain civic idolatry: worshipping institutions while ignoring whether ordinary lives are protected and dignified. Maritain’s America isn’t an artifact to preserve; it’s a relationship to continually renegotiate, and that’s why it can survive its own contradictions.
