"The individual mirrors in his individuation the preordained social laws of exploitation, however mediated"
About this Quote
“Preordained” does double work. It’s a jab at the quasi-religious aura capitalism acquires when its outcomes are presented as fate (“that’s just how the world works”). It also signals structure: exploitation isn’t an occasional moral failure but a patterned logic. Adorno’s sting is that the system doesn’t merely constrain the individual from the outside; it recruits the individual from the inside, teaching people to desire what diminishes them.
The qualifier “however mediated” is where the Frankfurt School’s sophistication sits. Adorno knows exploitation rarely appears as a boss twirling a mustache. It travels through institutions and culture: job markets, credentials, advertising, popular music, even the language of self-improvement. Mediation makes domination harder to see and easier to internalize. You don’t feel coerced; you feel “motivated.”
Context matters: writing in the shadow of fascism and amid mass consumer culture, Adorno distrusted easy stories about progress. The line compresses his bleak insight: modern society can manufacture individuality as a product, then sell it back as freedom.
