Science & Tech Quote by Paul Vixie

"The Internet is no longer the kind of thing where only six guys in the world can build it. Now, you can write a couple of checks and get one of your own"

About this Quote

There’s a sly chill in Vixie’s line: it treats the Internet less like a shared miracle and more like a purchasable appliance. The joke lands because it’s true in two directions at once. Early Internet infrastructure did feel like a priesthood: a small, unusually competent set of engineers who understood the wiring, ran the key services, and carried an ethic of stewardship. “Only six guys” is exaggeration as critique, a wink at how concentrated technical power used to be.

Then the pivot: “write a couple of checks.” Vixie isn’t celebrating democratization so much as naming the new gatekeepers. The barrier moved from deep expertise to capital, procurement, and vendor relationships. You don’t need to understand routing, naming, or security at the level those early builders did; you need budget, cloud credits, and a legal team. That shift changes the Internet’s moral physics: when networks are easy to buy, they’re also easy to duplicate, enclose, and weaponize. “One of your own” carries the subtext of private fiefdoms: corporate walled gardens, national firewalls, bespoke platforms that mimic “the Internet” while quietly rewriting its rules.

Context matters because Vixie comes out of DNS and operations culture, where fragility is constant and “works” is never permanent. The line reads like an operator’s warning: convenience isn’t neutrality. As the Internet becomes something you can purchase and instantiate, it becomes something that can be owned, segmented, and optimized for whoever pays most, not whoever connects.
