Subtext: you don’t have to think, doubt, or pity; you only have to comply with what’s “appropriate.”

Context sharpens the intent. Streicher was a leading Nazi antisemite and publisher of Der Sturmer, a paper that specialized in lurid, repetitive mythmaking. His power wasn’t military strategy; it was emotional conditioning. By the time the regime escalated from exclusion to deportation to industrialized murder, this kind of rhetoric had helped build the psychological infrastructure: habituation to hatred, the erasure of innocence, the conversion of neighbors into threats.

Calling him a “soldier” understates the role. Streicher’s sentence is a weapon designed for the home front: it recruits ordinary people into complicity by turning extermination into common sense.
