Streicher’s line is propaganda doing its favorite trick: laundering hate through the language of “education.” By insisting Jews are “a race and not a religion,” he tries to reclassify Jewish identity as biological destiny, not belief. That move matters because it forecloses escape valves that modern pluralism depends on: conversion, assimilation, individual variation. If Jewishness is race, it becomes inheritable, permanent, and therefore, in the racist imagination, legitimately “managed” by the state.

The second sentence weaponizes paternalism. “Not to persecute” is a preemptive legal and moral alibi, the kind that anticipates the obvious objection and dissolves it with a euphemism. He casts himself as a public-health messenger “enlightening Gentiles,” framing Jews as a concealed hazard and non-Jews as unsuspecting victims who must be “on guard.” It’s fear, packaged as civic responsibility. The subtext is collective suspicion: you don’t need evidence of wrongdoing, only membership in the targeted category.

Context does the rest. Streicher wasn’t merely a “soldier”; he was the publisher of Der Sturmer, a Nazi tabloid specializing in grotesque racial caricature and sexualized conspiracy myths. In the 1930s and during the war, this rhetoric helped normalize exclusion, dispossession, and ultimately extermination by making anti-Jewish violence feel like defense rather than aggression. His phrasing is calibrated to widen complicity: it invites ordinary people to see prejudice as vigilance, and cruelty as prevention. That’s how ideological mass violence recruits its foot soldiers - by calling them guardians.
