Calling the “main factor” the “life” of the spirit is an attack on theatrical deadness - the polished, external performance that hits marks but never risks belief.

The phrase “the actor and his part” matters because it refuses the old split between technique and truth. Stanislavsky isn’t saying the actor should disappear into the role like a mystic; he’s describing a duet. The “joint feelings” implies a negotiated intimacy: the actor brings personal memory, temperament, and nerves; the role brings given circumstances, stakes, and language. When those two lines meet, the performance stops being an imitation and becomes behavior.

Then he pivots to “subconscious creation,” which is where his system becomes less about willpower and more about conditions. You can’t command inspiration, but you can build a rehearsal process that invites it: attention to objectives, actions, physical tasks, and truthful listening. The subtext is almost therapeutic: don’t fake emotion; do the work that makes emotion unavoidable.
