Humans encounter the social equivalent - bad policies, broken relationships, predictable incentives - and still double down, partly because our reinforcements are messier. We’re rewarded not for being correct, but for being loyal, consistent, charismatic, or simply loud. The subtext is behaviorist: learning isn’t a moral achievement or an IQ flex. It’s conditioning. If the environment keeps paying you for the wrong behavior, you’ll keep doing it and call it principle.

Context matters. Skinner wrote in an era when behaviorism was fighting for cultural dominance against introspective psychology and romantic ideas of free will. This line weaponizes that debate: if you insist you’re guided by reason and inner values, why do you keep repeating the same mistakes when the consequences are obvious? The cynicism is clinical, not poetic. Humans aren’t less capable than rats; we’re just more skilled at rationalizing our failures to learn, then building systems that reward the rationalization.
