Life & Wisdom Quote by Cleobulus

"The middle course is the best"

About this Quote

Aphorisms like this don’t survive 2,500 years because they’re “nice.” They survive because they’re useful: portable ethics for a world where certainty gets you killed. Cleobulus, one of the Seven Sages, isn’t offering bland moderation so much as a survival technology for the Greek polis, a place allergic to extremes. In an era of factional feuds, tyrants rising and falling, and status always up for grabs, the “middle course” reads as political advice disguised as personal virtue.

The line’s power is its economy. “Best” is doing heavy lifting: not “good,” not “safer,” but best, a word that quietly claims an objective standard while refusing to specify one. That ambiguity is the trick. It lets the saying slide between registers: eat and drink without excess, speak without boasting, rule without cruelty, resist without martyrdom. It’s a moral Swiss Army knife.

The subtext is anti-heroic. Greek culture loved the glitter of outsized ambition and the drama of vengeance; the sages distrusted it. The middle course is a critique of the hot-blooded male prestige economy where honor is won by escalation. It also flatters the speaker: to advocate moderation is to imply you have the judgment to locate the center when everyone else is lurching.

Still, there’s an edge here, not serenity. The “middle” isn’t neutrality; it’s control. It’s a call to calibrate desire, to keep your life governable, and to avoid becoming the story others tell about someone who went too far.
