Creativity Quote by Joan Baez

"The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of non-violence has been the organization of violence"

About this Quote

Baez lands the line like a folk lyric with a sting in the last chord: nonviolence, for all its moral shine, is notoriously hard to organize; violence, for all its brute efficiency, turns out to be just as much of a mess. The joke is bleak, but it’s not casual. She’s puncturing two fantasies at once: that peace is simply a matter of good intentions and that war is a machine that, once switched on, reliably delivers control, clarity, and outcomes.

Coming from Baez, the intent is also self-critique. She spent decades inside movements that romanticized “the people” while often failing at logistics, coalition-building, and staying power. “Organization of non-violence” nods to the unglamorous work behind protest - training, discipline, restraint under provocation, and the constant pressure to keep a movement from fracturing. Calling it a “flop” doesn’t renounce the ethic; it rejects the myth that righteousness automatically scales.

The twist is that violence is supposed to be the organized alternative: armies, chains of command, budgets, protocols. Baez flips that assumption. Violence may be institutionally polished, but it still produces chaos: blowback, escalation, civilian suffering, moral injury, and political goals dissolving into trauma and debt. In the Cold War-to-Vietnam-to-post-9/11 American arc, “organized” violence repeatedly promised order and delivered quagmires.

Subtext: neither side gets to hide behind ideology. If nonviolence wants to win, it needs competence, not purity. If violence claims to be “necessary,” it has to answer for its own chronic incompetence - and the human costs it treats as rounding errors.
