Daily Inspiration Quote by Lynden Oscar Pindling

"The overall objective still is to advance Bahamians to the very top spot in this country"

About this Quote

A line like this only sounds bland until you remember who’s speaking and when. Lynden Pindling wasn’t offering a motivational poster; he was issuing a governing mandate aimed at flipping a social hierarchy that, in colonial and immediate post-colonial Bahamas, had long placed Black Bahamians and the local majority somewhere below the levers of power, prestige, and property. “Overall objective” signals program, not sentiment: a national project with a scoreboard.

The phrasing does two things at once. “Advance” is the language of mobility and merit, but in Pindling’s mouth it also functions as a polite synonym for redress. It implies that the system has been arranged to stall Bahamians out, and that the state has not just permission but responsibility to intervene. Then comes the blunt destination: “the very top spot”. That’s rhetorically aggressive in a restrained suit-and-tie way, because it frames the nation as a ladder and openly declares who should be on the highest rung.

The subtext is a careful balancing act. Pindling doesn’t say “against” anyone, and he doesn’t name the groups whose dominance is being challenged. That omission is strategic: it keeps the promise broad enough to unify supporters while letting opponents hear a threat without being handed a single inflammatory sentence to quote back. In the context of majority rule politics and the building of a post-independence state, it’s both aspiration and warning: the Bahamas will no longer be run as a place where Bahamians are guests in their own country.
