There’s also a neat bit of professional self-positioning. McDiarmid isn’t declaring his own role the best, but everyone knows Palpatine’s arc is structurally dependent on Anakin’s fall. By boosting Christensen, he implicitly elevates the entire tragic engine of the story - including his own performance - without ever sounding self-congratulatory.
