Balthasar is making a surgical claim that quietly rearranges the whole reading order of the Gospels. If the Passion narratives were composed first as a coherent unit, then Christianity’s “origin story” isn’t a cradle scene or a mountain sermon; it’s an execution. The subtext is stark: the earliest Christian imagination organized itself around the scandal of the cross, then let everything else in Jesus’ life be narrated in its gravitational field.

The line also functions as a critique of sentimental or merely inspirational takes on Jesus. Balthasar, a theologian allergic to thin moralism, is pointing to a literary-theological fact with pastoral bite: you don’t get to treat the crucifixion as an unfortunate finale. The Gospels are architected so that the death of Jesus is not an ending but a lens. The plot runs backward: meaning is generated from the catastrophe outward.

Context matters. Mid-20th-century biblical scholarship was increasingly attentive to form, sources, and composition - how traditions were shaped before they were written down. Balthasar is drawing on that atmosphere while steering it toward his own signature emphasis: the “drama” of revelation, where God’s self-disclosure is not primarily an idea but an event that costs something. Calling the Passion the first “unity” suggests early communities had a stable narrative core - a remembered sequence of betrayal, trial, suffering, death, and vindication - that demanded to be told whole, almost liturgically.

It works because it’s both modest and explosive: a compositional observation that doubles as a manifesto about what Christianity thinks is most real.
