Time & Perspective Quote by Anthony Storr

"The professional must learn to be moved and touched emotionally, yet at the same time stand back objectively: I've seen a lot of damage done by tea and sympathy"

About this Quote

Storr’s line is a neat little booby trap for anyone who thinks care is synonymous with comfort. He’s describing a professional posture that sounds impossible at first: be emotionally available enough to register real suffering, then disciplined enough not to be swallowed by it. The hinge is that sly last clause - “I’ve seen a lot of damage done by tea and sympathy” - which punctures the cozy British myth that kindness is always benign.

The intent is corrective, even a little prosecutorial. In clinical work (Storr trained as a psychiatrist), “sympathy” can become a solvent: it dissolves boundaries, encourages dependency, and flatters the helper’s self-image as the good, understanding one. “Tea” is doing cultural work here too. It’s the domestic ritual of soothing: a cup, a tone, a familiar script. Storr suggests that when professionals default to that script, they may trade truth for reassurance. They ease the room’s discomfort rather than the patient’s predicament.

Subtext: emotional responsiveness is not the enemy; unexamined emotionality is. The professional must allow themselves to be “moved” - otherwise they become cold technicians - but they must also “stand back,” because empathy without distance can turn into collusion, sentimentality, or even manipulation. His cynicism is surgical, not cruel: he’s warning that the warmest gestures can be a way of avoiding hard conversations, hard limits, and the slow work of change. In an era that increasingly celebrates “being there,” Storr insists that being useful sometimes means refusing the easy comfort both parties crave.
