Daily Inspiration Quote by Jules Renard

"The story I am writing exists, written in absolutely perfect fashion, some place, in the air. All I must do is find it and copy it"

About this Quote

Renard frames writing less as invention than as retrieval, a sly demotion of the author’s ego that still flatters the work. The “absolutely perfect” story already “exists…in the air”; the dramatist’s job is merely to locate it and “copy it.” That last verb is the tell. Copying is humble, almost clerical, yet it implies fidelity to an ideal that keeps slipping out of reach. The line is both a comfort and a dare: if the story is already perfect somewhere, then every flaw on the page is yours, not the universe’s.

The intent carries a double edge typical of a fin-de-siecle skeptic. On one level it’s a practical mantra against writer’s block: stop trying to force brilliance and start listening, observing, transcribing the world with accuracy. On another, it’s Renard’s quiet satire of romantic genius. Inspiration becomes atmospheric background noise, not divine lightning. The author is a technician with good ears.

Context matters: Renard wrote in a France crowded with manifestos about art’s mission and the artist’s role (Naturalism’s scientific pose, Symbolism’s mysticism). His sentence pirouettes between them. “In the air” nods to the Symbolists’ intangible ideal; “copy it” drags the whole thing back to the desk lamp, closer to Naturalist discipline. For a dramatist, it also hints at theater’s paradox: the play feels predestined when it finally “works,” but it only becomes real through ruthless craft, revision, and repetition. Renard makes that paradox sound effortless, which is its sharpest trick.
