The subtext is his broader war on herd morality. Nietzsche thinks communities often confuse conformity with goodness because it’s administratively convenient: consensus keeps the peace, lowers risk, and flatters the group’s self-image. Teaching a child to “hold in higher esteem” the like-minded isn’t just bad pedagogy; it’s a loyalty program for intellectual laziness. Esteem becomes a social currency paid out for sameness, not for strength, honesty, or insight.

Context matters: Nietzsche writes in the shadow of a massifying 19th-century Europe, with its nation-building, its moralizing institutions, and its burgeoning public opinion. His suspicion of “the herd” is also a suspicion of education as domestication. A youth who learns that belonging is earned by mirroring the group will start editing their perceptions to stay safe. Difference won’t read as information; it will register as insult.

The aphorism works because it flips a pious expectation. We assume youth are corrupted by rebels, by bad influences, by the strange. Nietzsche says the real poison is the reward structure that makes curiosity feel like betrayal.
