Aging & Wisdom Quote by John Astin

"The themes Poe used were universal and timeless. As long as the English language exists at all, we will be able to appreciate what he did. It will not age! It will not become dated!"

About this Quote

Astin’s praise of Poe is doing two jobs at once: canon-building and crisis management. On the surface it’s a fan’s assurance that Poe’s work won’t fossilize into “important but boring.” Underneath, it’s a defense of pleasure in the classroom and the culture industry, where old literature is often treated like medicine you’re supposed to swallow for your own good. An actor insisting Poe “will not age” is also an actor insisting on the durability of performance itself: mood, timing, and the reliable shock of a well-built scene.

The rhetoric is intentionally blunt, almost stagey. “Universal and timeless” is a big, familiar claim, but Astin tightens it with a practical condition: “As long as the English language exists.” That’s a clever anchor. He’s not arguing Poe survives because critics say so; he survives because the instrument of delivery remains. It’s a vote of confidence in voice, cadence, and craft - in the way Poe’s sentences can still modulate dread, irony, and obsession even when the fashions around them change.

Context matters, too. Astin comes from an era of mass TV and pop-goth sensibility, where Poe is less a museum piece than a living brand: recited, adapted, parodied, revived every Halloween and exam season. “It will not become dated!” reads like a rebuttal to the suspicion that melodrama expires. Astin’s subtext: Poe’s darkness isn’t a period costume; it’s an operating system, endlessly reinstallable.
