"The treason of which I stand convicted loses all its guilt, has been sanctified as a duty, and will be ennobled as a sacrifice"
About this Quote
The subtext is aimed at multiple audiences at once. To the judges and the Crown, it’s defiance with a polished grin: you can brand me, but you can’t shame me. To sympathizers, it’s recruitment. The claim that guilt has been “sanctified” borrows religious language to cast political rebellion as something closer to vocation than crime, positioning the accused as a kind of secular martyr. That word choice isn’t accidental in a 19th-century Irish context, where faith and nationalism were braided together; sanctity is a claim to public legitimacy, not private comfort.
Context does the rest. Meagher, a Young Ireland figure later swept into revolutionary legend, is speaking from inside a machinery designed to make dissent look petty, selfish, and dangerous. His rhetoric insists the opposite: that the real betrayal is obedience to an unjust order. “Will be ennobled” also signals patience and historical confidence. He’s writing for the future - betting that today’s criminal record becomes tomorrow’s commemorative plaque, and that the losing side can still win the narrative.
