The intent isn’t to describe crime; it’s to redirect empathy and policy toward white grievance. By narrowing the frame to interracial rape, Duke avoids the larger, inconvenient reality that sexual violence is overwhelmingly intraracial and most often perpetrated by acquaintances, not cartoon villains. He also erases Black women twice: first by implying their victimization by white men is negligible, then by making their suffering useful only as a rhetorical counterweight in a contest over racial blame.

The subtext is political triage. If white women are positioned as the primary victims and Black men as the primary threat, the next steps write themselves: harsher policing, looser moral constraints on surveillance and punishment, and a cultural permission slip for racial suspicion. Historically, this trope has functioned as a pretext for lynching, segregationist panic, and “law and order” campaigns that treat racial control as public safety.

Calling Duke a “celebrity” doesn’t soften the edges; it clarifies the tactic. Celebrity converts an extremist claim into a sound bite that travels farther than evidence ever could, optimized for outrage, repetition, and the comforting simplicity of an enemy.
