Art & Creativity Quote by Edward Steichen

"The use of the term art medium is, to say the least, misleading, for it is the artist that creates a work of art not the medium. It is the artist in photography that gives form to content by a distillation of ideas, thought, experience, insight and understanding"

About this Quote

Steichen is pushing back against the lazy way people talk about photography: as if the camera, the film, the chemistry, or the gadgetry were the real author. Calling it an "art medium", he argues, smuggles in the idea that the medium itself is the engine of meaning. That’s a useful fiction for salesmen and technophiles, but it diminishes what he spent a career proving: photography isn’t elevated by equipment; it’s elevated by intention.

The key move is his insistence on "distillation". He’s not describing photography as capture, documentation, or even transcription. He’s describing it as reduction: taking the noise of lived reality and compressing it into a form that holds. That word choice places the photographer closer to a poet than a stenographer. The subtext is a rebuke to two camps at once: critics who treat photography as mechanically produced and photographers who hide behind "the medium" as an alibi for thin ideas.

Context matters. Steichen lived through photography’s scramble for legitimacy, from Pictorialism’s painterly mimicry to modernism’s crisp assertion that the camera had its own visual grammar. As the medium became mass culture - magazines, advertising, war reportage - the risk grew that photography would be read as mere delivery system. Steichen’s line draws a boundary: the camera can’t supply insight, only a person can. He’s making authorship the moral center of the image, insisting that what makes a photograph art is not how it was made, but why.
