Kemble’s context matters. She was a celebrity actress who married into a Georgia plantation family and later became known for her journals condemning slavery. This line shows the messy middle of that evolution: sympathy colliding with the era’s racial “science,” compassion still packaged in paternalism. It’s an attempt to argue for humanity without surrendering supremacy - a progressive posture that, in practice, keeps the colonial story as the default narrator.
