Leadership Quote by James Connolly

"The worker is the slave of capitalist society, the female worker is the slave of that slave"

About this Quote

Connolly’s line lands like a clenched fist because it refuses the comforting fiction that exploitation is evenly shared. By calling the worker a “slave,” he’s not reaching for metaphorical drama so much as moral indictment: wage labor under capitalism is coercion dressed up as choice. Then he doubles the charge. “The female worker is the slave of that slave” names a second layer of captivity that socialist rhetoric, then as now, often treated as a side issue.

The intent is surgical: to force a labor movement (largely male, often inward-looking) to confront how patriarchy functions as capitalism’s unpaid assistant. The male worker may be economically dominated, but he can still hold domestic power, social authority, and sexual entitlement over women. Connolly compresses the household into the political economy: the home isn’t a refuge from the market; it’s another worksite, where reproductive labor and care are extracted without wages and policed through custom and dependence.

The subtext is also a warning about revolutionary hypocrisy. A movement that topples bosses but preserves gender hierarchy simply rearranges who gets to play master. Connolly, shaped by Irish nationalism, trade union organizing, and a Marxist framework, is writing in a moment when women’s labor was expanding in factories and services while their legal and civic status lagged behind. The phrase “that slave” dares his comrades to see complicity, not just victimhood, and to treat women’s emancipation as central to working-class liberation rather than a charitable add-on.
