Parenting & Family Quote by Sun Ra

"The world is in such a bad condition that if they don't find what you call a redeemer, every man, woman and child on this planet will be eliminated"

About this Quote

Sun Ra isn’t predicting apocalypse so much as staging an intervention. He takes the language of salvation and drags it out of church and into the street, where it becomes less about personal sin and more about systemic collapse. The phrase “what you call a redeemer” is the tell: it’s a sideways glance at the listener’s categories, a refusal to endorse any single messiah while still insisting that something like redemption is politically and spiritually urgent. He’s both using and mocking the craving for a singular hero who fixes everything.

In the context of Sun Ra’s Afrofuturist cosmology, “redeemer” can mean an alien intelligence, a new consciousness, a black radical imagination, a bandleader with a spaceship of sound - anything that breaks the loop of violence and stagnation. His art treated music as technology: a vehicle to exit the terms of an oppressive reality. So the stakes (“every man, woman and child… eliminated”) read as deliberately maximalist, almost pulp-sci-fi in their bluntness, because catastrophe is how you force an audience to stop treating crisis as background noise.

The subtext is sharper: waiting for a redeemer is itself part of the problem. It’s a critique of passivity and a diagnosis of modernity’s fetish for rescue narratives. Sun Ra frames annihilation as the default endpoint of a world that cannot imagine alternatives. The line works because it sounds like prophecy but functions like a dare: if you can’t invent a new future, you’ll inherit the end.
