"There are many persons ready to do what is right because in their hearts they know it is right. But they hesitate, waiting for the other fellow to make the make the first move - and he, in turn, waits for you"
About this Quote
The subtext is a quiet indictment of respectability. “The other fellow” isn’t a villain; he’s a mirror. Everyone is waiting for permission, for cover, for the comfort of a crowd. Anderson exposes how responsibility gets outsourced to an imaginary someone else, turning decency into a spectator sport. Her sentence structure even enacts the loop: you wait, he waits, the moment passes.
Context sharpens the point. Anderson, a Black contralto who faced segregation head-on (most famously when the DAR barred her from Constitution Hall, leading to the 1939 Lincoln Memorial concert), understood that history doesn’t move because hearts are pure. It moves because somebody risks being first. Coming from a musician, the metaphor lands: the downbeat has to be given. Without it, the orchestra of good intentions just tunes forever.
