"There are no heroes in most of my stories. I look at our society with a critical eye and find nothing extraordinary in the people I see"
About this Quote
The subtext is less misanthropy than method. In Mahfouz’s Cairo, power is diffuse, habit is destiny, and “society” isn’t an abstract villain but a web of family obligation, state pressure, religious authority, and economic squeeze. Heroism would imply a clean escape hatch; Mahfouz’s realism denies one. His characters aren’t meant to inspire us out of politics and into personal virtue. They’re meant to show how virtue gets negotiated, compromised, and sometimes quietly extinguished under conditions that reward conformity.
Context matters: writing through late colonial Egypt, monarchy, the Nasser revolution, and its aftermath, Mahfouz watched grand promises harden into bureaucracy and surveillance. The critical eye he claims is the eye of someone who has seen “extraordinary” rhetoric used to justify very ordinary domination. By stripping away heroes, he also strips away the comforting lie that history is moved by exceptional individuals. What’s left is his real subject: the average person’s complicity, endurance, and small rebellions, rendered with enough clarity to feel like indictment.
