"There can be no two opinions as to what a highbrow is. He is the man or woman of thoroughbred intelligence who rides his mind at a gallop across country in pursuit of an idea"
About this Quote
The subtext is Woolf at war with easy binaries. The line “There can be no two opinions” sounds authoritarian on purpose, a little send-up of confident cultural gatekeeping. Then she uses that gatekeeper’s certainty to smuggle in a more radical definition: intellectual seriousness as motion, appetite, pursuit. It’s a defense of the person who follows an idea past politeness, past the hedges of received opinion, past the safe roads.
Context matters. Woolf wrote in a Britain obsessed with “brows” as social taxonomy - high, low, and the supposedly bland middle - a way to police culture and, by extension, people. By reframing highbrow-ness as a dynamic practice rather than a static status, she claims elite intensity for anyone capable of it, including women, and exposes how much cultural ranking depends on costume rather than courage.
