Context matters. Jackson wrote in an era when women were tasked with maintaining home life as both labor and virtue, while also being denied many public avenues for power. Her point lands with extra bite because she’s exposing how the private sphere - supposedly the most “civilized” space - can be the least examined. It’s not misanthropy so much as a warning: the family is where we rehearse our worst distortions, precisely because we think we already know everyone there.
