"There is no great invention, from fire to flying, which has not been hailed as an insult to some god"
About this Quote
The intent isn’t to dunk on religion so much as to diagnose a pattern of resistance. “Insult to some god” works because it’s deliberately nonspecific. Not your god, not any doctrine in particular, but the nearest sacred boundary a culture uses to police what humans are “meant” to do. That boundary can be theological, yes, but it can also be moral panic, natural-law rhetoric, or the sanctity of tradition disguised as cosmic order. Haldane’s real target is the reflex that treats novelty as blasphemy simply because it rearranges who gets power and who gets to define the permissible.
The subtext is almost Marxist in its materialism: what’s framed as offense against heaven is often anxiety on earth. New capacities upend priesthoods, guilds, empires, gender roles, and economic arrangements. Calling an invention impious is a convenient way to make social control sound like piety.
Context matters. Haldane lived through mechanized war, the rise of aviation, the dread promise of modern chemistry and genetics, and the long argument over Darwinism’s implications. He’d watched “playing God” become a recurring indictment, leveled not only at scientists but at the future itself. The quote is a reminder that outrage is not evidence - it’s a symptom.
