"There is no limit to what a man can do so long as he does not care a straw who gets the credit for it"
About this Quote
As a journalist formed in late-Victorian and Edwardian Britain, then hardened by the Great War's bureaucratic machinery and propaganda, Montague knew how institutions actually move: not by pure ideals, but by incentives. Credit is one of the most corrosive incentives because it makes every project a stage. Once recognition becomes the goal, the work narrows to what can be seen, attributed, and bragged about. The unseen labor - the scaffolding, the editing, the compromise, the unglamorous coordination - gets neglected because it doesn't photograph well.
The subtext is a critique of ego as a kind of managerial toxin. "No limit" is deliberate hyperbole, but it points to a real phenomenon: renouncing credit frees you to collaborate, to delegate, to let other people shine, to change course without feeling publicly humiliated. It also sidesteps the zero-sum games of office politics; if you don't require the trophy, rivals lose their leverage.
There's a darker undertone, too. The same anonymity that enables civic achievement can enable manipulation, letting power operate without accountability. Montague is selling a high-performing humility, but he knows the mask can fit more than one face.
