The joke isn’t really about bad outfits. It’s about the gap between the cultural script of liberation and the messy, insecure reality of the people trying to live it.

Set against the late-80s/90s hangover of the sexual revolution, the punch lands in the contradiction. On paper, sex was supposedly freer, more open, more honest. In practice, there was AIDS panic, moral backlash, and a new kind of performative “edge” that often looked like armor. “Wearing clothes that guaranteed we wouldn’t get laid” is funny because it recasts fashion as sabotage: thrift-store irony, oversized flannel, purposeful ugliness, the anti-glam posture that said “I’m too cool to need you.” Leary implies that a lot of that posture was defensive, a way to control vulnerability by preemptively opting out.

The intent is classic Leary: puncture sanctimony, drag ideology back to the body, make the audience laugh at the story they tell themselves. Subtextually, it’s also a critique of how quickly rebellion becomes a uniform. Even “freedom” can turn into a costume, especially when a generation is juggling desire with dread and trying to look unbothered while very much bothered.
