Life & Wisdom Quote by Daniel Keys Moran

"There's no way for me to know, but my best guess, as it must be for everyone, is that other people are pretty much like me"

About this Quote

Solipsism rarely sounds so friendly. Moran takes the oldest trap of consciousness - you only ever live inside your own skull - and flips it into a pragmatic ethic: if you can never truly verify another mind, the least arrogant move is to assume it resembles yours. The line’s quiet power is that it refuses both extremes: the narcissist’s “no one is real but me” and the romantic’s “everyone is radically special and therefore unknowable.” It lands in the middle, where most moral life actually happens.

The phrasing does a lot of work. “There’s no way for me to know” isn’t a shrug; it’s an admission that certainty is unavailable, not that caring is. “My best guess” frames empathy as an imperfect model, like a scientist running on limited data. Then comes the sly, democratizing jab: “as it must be for everyone.” That clause punctures the fantasy that anyone has privileged access to other people’s interiors. We’re all guessing. Some of us are just worse at admitting it.

The subtext is a warning about how quickly we turn ignorance into ideology. If you assume others are fundamentally unlike you, it becomes easier to treat them as props, enemies, or mysteries you don’t have to solve. Moran’s alternative is psychologically modest but socially consequential: default to similarity, and you default to restraint. You hesitate before you dehumanize. You grant continuity of fear, desire, boredom, pride. In a culture hooked on hot takes about “what people are like,” this is a bracing reminder that the most responsible theory of mind starts as a confession.
