Creativity Quote by Tori Amos

"There's room for everybody on the planet to be creative and conscious if you are your own person. If you're trying to be like somebody else, then there is, isn't"

About this Quote

Tori Amos is doing a neat bait-and-switch here: she starts with a generous, almost utopian claim about abundance - “room for everybody” - then quietly reveals the catch. Creativity isn’t a scarce resource because there aren’t enough stages or record deals; it becomes scarce the moment you treat identity like a cover song. The line lands because it reframes competition as mimicry. There’s no need to “beat” someone else if the real trap is trying to be them.

The intent feels both encouraging and corrective, the way an artist talks when she’s watched too many young musicians contort themselves into whatever the industry currently rewards. Amos came up in an era that demanded women performers be legible types: the pop ingénue, the rocker, the confessional poet. Her own career - weird, literate, abrasive, tender, sexually frank - is basically a long argument against that sorting hat. In that context, “be your own person” isn’t self-help wallpaper; it’s survival advice.

Subtext: consciousness and creativity are linked, and both require ownership. If you’re “trying to be like somebody else,” you’re outsourcing your attention, living on someone else’s script, and shrinking your inner bandwidth. Amos isn’t romanticizing originality as a lightning bolt. She’s pointing to a practice: notice your impulses, defend your oddness, resist the algorithmic pressure to become a cleanly marketable replica. The sting in her final clause - “then there isn’t” - is the hard truth behind the pep talk: imitation doesn’t just fail to make you special; it makes you disappear.
